Scene one: A mom takes her young son along with her to the grocery store. She finishes her shopping and leaves the store, bag in hand, son following behind. She turns to look at him and sees that he has a candy bar in his hand. She begins shouting at him: "Where did you get that?! You thief! You stole that didn't you! You are no good...good for nothing. You'll never amount to anything. I'm ashamed of you. You make me sick."
Then she grabs him by the shirt and takes him to the store manager: "Ms. manager, my son stole this candy bar. He's a good-for-nothing thief. Here, take your candy bar, I'll deal with him."

She turns to look at him and sees that he has a candy bar in his hand. With an exclamation of surprise she says: Where did you get that?! That's not like you at all to take something without paying for it! You're a GOOD BOY. Good boys don't do that, and you're a good boy!"
Then she take him by the hand to the store manager: "Ms. manager, I am so sorry, but my son took this candy bar without paying for it and that's not like him at all! He's a GOOD BOY. Here's your candy bar. He won't do that again. He's a good boy!
A Look in the Mirror
When you look in the mirror, what do you see, good boy/girl or bad boy/girl? How do you determine your "goodness" or "badness"? We usually judge ourselves by our behavior, what we do and don't do; what we think and don't think. However, the Big Guy judges us by our identity.
There are some wonderful words in the Good Book that state: "...you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints..." (Ephesians 1:18). When He sees YOU, He sees His glorious inheritance. And you are not "just" His glorious inheritance, you are the RICHES of His glorious inheritance "in the saints"! When He says "in the saints," that means those who identify with Him. If you identify with Him, that means YOU.
YOU Are a Good Boy/Girl!
So, your exercise to WAKE UP your spiritual life is to look in the mirror and say - emphatically: "You are the riches of God's glorious inheritance in the saints!" Do it first thing in the morning and remind yourself all day long, every day. You will find that your behavior is much more likely to be consistent with this truth if you remind yourself of this truth. If you find yourself behaving contrary to this truth, then stop! Remind yourself of who you are, and behave consistently with your identity as the riches of God's glorious inheritance in the saints!
He LOVES You and He LIKES You
The Big Guy LOVES His glorious inheritance and He LIKES His glorious inheritance. Yes. He loves you AND He likes you. Let that truth soak into you. Marinate in it. And act like it.
